Not only is it a messy world, but we also have blind spots to some of the chaos surrounding us. So how do we move past the mess to success? Scott Jeffrey Miller joins Kevin to discuss vulnerability, self-awareness, and feedback. Scott has spent 23 years with FranklinCovey and serves as the executive vice president of thought leadership. In addition, he is the author of Management Mess to Leadership Success: 30 Challenges To Become The Leader You Would Follow. The book is divided into challenges that leaders can apply to change the way they lead and produce greater results. The big takeaway is Scott believes that vulnerability is a new leadership competency. Leaders don’t need to have all the answers, however, they do need to know when to be confident, like in times of change or crisis.

When I think of Independence Day, I think about a lot more than just hot dogs and fireworks. Mostly, I think about values, and I think about the incredibly hard work that our forefathers did many years ago – work that was based on a shared set of values.

So today I have four questions for leaders to consider when thinking about the values that are important to them.

Steve Robinson was integral to the Chick-fil-A marketing team for 34 years. He was there for the beginning of the brand we know today, including the Eat Mor Chikin campaign and the decision to stay closed on Sundays. Steve joins Kevin to discuss his new book, Covert Cows and Chick-fil-A: How Faith, Cows, and Chicken Built an Iconic Brand. He shares stories and examples that demonstrate the culture at Chick-fil-A. Steve acknowledges that the company wasn’t an overnight success and leadership was motivated by making an impact. The culture was not a bunch of words on paper, but the values and priorities of the organization and the trust in all the employees to empower them to grow the business.

A sponsor is different than a mentor. A sponsor believes in your value, advocates for you, and allows you to take risks and has your back if you fail. Kevin sits down with Sylvia Hewlett, author of THE SPONSOR EFFECT: How to be a Better Leader by Investing in Others. They talk about the differences between a sponsor and a mentor. Sylvia also shares real-life examples of the sponsor/protégé relationship. She stresses that this isn’t a one-way relationship. Data shows that leaders who become a sponsor are more likely to receive a promotion.

In this episode, Sylvia shares:

1. Her definition of a sponsor.

2. A 7 step process to becoming a sponsor.

3. Advice on how to identify your own sponsor.
