Culture is a much-used word, at work and in our personal lives. And it’s usually over-complicated.

In this episode, I’m sharing a story from my family’s past to help you better (and more simply) understand exactly what culture is and isn’t.

Tweet it out: Culture doesn’t come solely from a big corporate push. It is built and formed in stories, behaviors, and every day occurrences. @KevinEikenberry

Several years ago, we started using the words “hybrid teams” to describe a team where there are some people working in a physical office and there are some people who work virtually outside of the office.

And while we started using this word well before the pandemic made it a household term, we believe that it’s an even better word than we ever realized.

In this episode, I’ll explain why “hybrid” is the right word for right now.

Tweet it out: Like new hybrids of roses or popcorn, a hybrid working situation should create a better option than what existed previously. @KevinEikenberry

Don’t let that title scare you. I am not turning this into a health series and I am not selling any supplements.

A few of months ago, I decided I wanted to get rid of my “COVID 19”. Pounds that is. So I studied up on intermittent fasting and then I went to work. And not only did I find that it worked for me, I also found some overall life and leadership lessons that I think might work for you.

Tweet it out: We can fast from food, or most anything else. How might you benefit from intermittent fasting from anything? Need some ideas? How about your phone, your TV, your email? @KevinEikenberry

Persistence is good and virtuous. But it’s also hard. And telling someone to be persistent seldom goes all that well. We may know it, but don’t want to hear it – or even know what to do with the advice when we hear it.

Many years ago when I was at Purdue, I was having a conversation with a friend who was in the process of interviewing for jobs after college. She was getting frustrated and when I gave her the advice to simply be persistent, I was met with the response referenced here above. She wasn’t thrilled.

So then I added a simple word to my advice of persistence. And that two word phrase is something I still use today in my own life and in coaching others. Check out the video below to learn more about the power of persistence.

It wasn’t planned, and over the past 18 months, many of us became remote leaders and workers. Darleen DeRosa and Jim Citrin are the authors of Leading at a Distance: Practical Lessons for Virtual Success. They sit down with Kevin to discuss leadership skills that have become more important as we work remotely. They asked leaders what their biggest challenge was in this environment and the majority said it is inspiring and motivating their teams. Purpose and authenticity have been increasingly important leadership capabilities over time, but they are now more central and expected than ever. We need to be more deliberate and thoughtful with our teams and find opportunities to build trust through a screen.

In this episode, Darleen and Jim share:

  1. How leaders can build trust.
  2. Things to think about when hiring virtually.
  3. Challenges for hybrid workers and hybrid teams.

I get asked this question a lot:

How can I be more influential?

And often times when I am asked this, it isn’t phrased exactly like that. It might sound more like…

How can I motivate my team to do more?
How can I better inspire my team?

There are a lot of ways that it is stated, but the bottom line is that they are asking: how do I influence people?

And I bring this up specifically because the way that the question is often phrased is part of the problem.

As leaders, if we want to have greater influence, we must focus on people and not position. Check out this episode to learn more about how YOU can be more influential.

You know when you are on a good team. In fact, you feel energized and productive when you work with that team. The question becomes, can we get engagement, productivity, and happiness at work? Mike Zani believes it can and when you have a happy and engaged team, productivity goes through the roof. Mike is the author of The Science of Dream Teams: How Talent Optimization Can Drive Engagement, Productivity and Happiness. He shares with Kevin that most CEOs have a business strategy and a financial plan. However, few have a talent strategy. Yet, productivity and the bottom line are the results of our talent. Engagement begins with an intentional mission and culture. When you get your team connected to the mission and values, you get discretionary effort.

In this episode, Mike breaks down the title of the book and shares his ideas on:

  1. A dream team.
  2. Talent Optimization.
  3. Engagement.
  4. Happiness.

Is more better? Maybe, if we are talking about ice cream. What about if we are talking about collaboration? Rob Cross would argue that we can become overwhelmed by all the connecting and collaborating. Pre-pandemic we spent 85% of our time in collaborative activities, like e-mail, phone calls, meetings… That is higher today. Rob is the author of Beyond Collaboration Overload: How to Work Smarter, Get Ahead, and Restore Your Well-Being. The book is a culmination of research on mapping the patterns of connectivity and collaboration among high performers. It’s not that they didn’t collaborate; however, they chose how they used their time and strategically connected. Rob shares why we tend to overextend ourselves and what we can do with the time we get back. Our well-being is tied to our healthy relationships and reducing the micro-stressors.

In this episode, Rob shares:

  1. The unintended consequences of collaboration.
  2. Strategies to work smarter.
  3. Indicators that we are in collaboration overload.

While enjoying a late-night snack, Raúl Sánchez and Dan Bullock came to the realization everyone sees the same pattern in the stars. Other places and cultures may label it differently, yet they see the same alignment. They wanted to look at patterns in communication. As organizations become more global, communication becomes that much more important. This holds for public speaking, writing e-mails, or negotiating contracts. Sánchez and Bullock are the authors of How to Communicate Effectively with Anyone, Anywhere. They discuss what is implied in conversation/writing and who is responsible for the messaging. In the end, it isn’t about us. As leaders, we are more effective if we use positive language and present the information for more than one sense (ethos, pathos, logos).

In this episode, Bullock and Sánchez discuss:

  1. Overall principles of effective communication.
  2. Global English.

It is important to understand what drives you to get out of bed in the morning. It is just as important to understand the motivation of your team. Christopher Coultas, along with his team at Leadership Worth Following, is the author of Driven Not Drained: Discover Your Path to Career Happiness, Effectiveness, and Influence. Chris shares the six components of the DriV model, which was designed to understand the why behind the what. With each component, there are competing priorities. For example, if you score high in productivity, you get your energy by doing things. This can become an issue as you move up the corporate ladder and find that you are delegating more tasks. Chris suggests understanding your drivers and drainers can help you find greater satisfaction in your job. Knowing what drives and drains your team can lead to more productivity and a better bottom line.

In this episode, Kevin and Chris discuss:

  1. Driven vs. drained.
  2. Drained vs. burnout.
  3. The DriV model.
  4. Team culture and drivers.
