Leading and managing. Mark Williams will tell you both are important parts of your job. However, people are promoted because they do their job well, yet don’t have the necessary tools to be good leaders. Mark is the author of, Lead Don’t Manage: 12 Lessons in Creating a Leadership Culture Base on Core Values. You can manage the day-to-day activities of your team, like attendance and workflow. However, to lead, you need to know it’s about the people that work for you and with you. He shares with Kevin the importance of purposeful, regular, and consistent communication. Your expectations often are born from your values, and you owe it to yourself and your team to share. Mark also talks about investing time in relationships throughout your organization, as it is the relationships that allow you to accomplish more.

In this episode, Mark:

  1. Shares his experiences in a leadership role.
  2. Discusses how individual values and relationships with your team go hand in hand.
  3. Talks about leadership alliances, both in-person and remote.

Does your leadership change the organization? For the better? This is the question Jonathan Raymond asked himself and had an aha moment. Jonathan is the author of Good Authority: How to Become the Leader Your Team Is Waiting For and joins Kevin to discuss the mindset shift leaders at all levels need to make. Your team does not need a leader who knows everything and solves all the problems. Your job as a leader is to think strategically about the organization. Your job as a leader is to create the emotional conditions for your team to grow. Let them do the jobs they were hired to do.

Opportunities have expiration dates.

I saw this quote recently, and I wish I could remember who/where to attribute this quote to because I instantly loved it. There is a lot of truth in it.

Let’s think about opportunity for a minute…

Have you ever missed an opportunity because you were unaware of it?

Have you ever missed an opportunity because you let it fall down your priority list?

Have you ever missed an opportunity because you delayed, or were stuck in analysis paralysis?

At least one is a yes.. guaranteed.

While there are many opportunities that we know about, there are many that we don’t notice…because we aren’t looking. In this episode, I’m sharing two big ideas to help you take advantage of all of the opportunities that come your way.

Tweet it out: Waiting has implications because opportunities have expiration dates. @KevinEikenberry

Good leaders take away the “me” factor. Yet, before you successfully lead, you need to know who you are. Minter Dial suggests we take the time (and it takes time) to recognize our strengths, weaknesses, fears, and triggers. When you have this information, you can supplement yourself. Minter’s latest book is You Lead, How Being Yourself Makes You A Better Leader. He suggests that you cannot control how you are perceived, but you can control your awareness. When you show your whole self at work, you encourage your team they can be themselves leading to more trust and success.

Are you present? Are you learning from your journey, especially when you stumble? Scott O’Neil recognizes we all struggle and need gentle reminders to be present, whether this is professionally or personally. Scott joins Kevin to discuss his book, Be Where Your Feet Are: Seven Principles to Keep you Present, Grounded and Thriving. As the CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which includes the Philadelphia 76ers (NBA) and the New Jersey Devils (NHL), he knows you win some you lose some. If you recognize where you are at, you have the opportunity to grow, go outside of your comfort zone, and be more prepared. We are about instant gratification, and we choose to take a long view and ask ourselves what we want to be and who we want to serve; it will change the way we work (for the better).

Every leadership course talks about delegation. And if it doesn’t, it comes up in the conversation.

How do I know this? Because I’ve taught hundreds and every time I do, we talk about delegation.

And even though it’s a major topic of conversation, many leaders are not doing it well.

In this episode, I’m giving four common reasons why people delegate and explaining why they are NOT good reasons to do so. I’ll also share four GOOD reasons that will help you be more effective in your delegation.

As long as I’ve been in the workplace, there’s always been a conversation about the dress code. In fact, when I first started working for Chevron, I was handed a copy of “Dress for Success” as part of the onboarding process.

Since then, the conversation has moved from “Casual Friday”…to casual every day…to the day when everyone was sent home to work and the dress code as we knew it changed significantly.

Now before you think this post and this video is about fashion, let me reassure you, it’s not. Instead, in this episode, I’m talking about how what we choose to wear has some pretty big implications far beyond what style of clothing is our favorite.

Tweet it out: Your choice of what to wear to work (even when at home) may have more implications than you realize for yourself and how you are perceived by others. @KevinEikenberry

It’s important to understand who you are before getting to the why. Some of us are more logical and task oriented. Others of us focus on our emotions, our environment, and the behavior of others to guide our success. Melody Wilding suggests these “Sensitive Strivers” can anticipate the needs of the team because they are aware of how others are feeling. This empathy can also preclude them from making decisions because they are worried about what others will think. Melody is the author of Trust Yourself: Stop Overthinking and Channel Your Emotions for Success at Work and draws on decades of research and client work to examine the intersection of sensitivity and achievement in the workplace. She and Kevin discuss the journey of professional and personal development starting at self-awareness and moving to self-growth.

I. Love. Auctions.

And I love pretty much any type of auction. But my favorite is hands-down an antique tractor auction. (Yep, they exist.)

And while if you like auctions, this video might be even more interesting to you. But regardless, I’m sharing the lessons that I learned from a recent tractor auction – and these apply to ANY leader, auction lover or not.

How do new ideas come about? Cyril Bouquet is the co-author of ALIEN THINKING: The Unconventional Path to Breakthrough Ideas. Although new, innovative ideas seem to appear magically, they take time to emerge, mature and become successful. Cyril and his co-authors studied professions of people who challenge existing paradigms (inventors, artists, scientists). They found these folks use five patterns of thinking that distinguish them from the rest of us. These patterns -Attention, Levitation, Imagination, Experimentation, and Navigation- can help innovative thinking and problem-solving. He also says the navigation piece can be the most difficult because this is where the “rubber meets the road” and often where we face the most resistance.

You might know that I grew up on a farm. And on a farm, you work late into the evening when needed. You see, my Dad was a night person. So it was not uncommon for me to work very late into the evening.

Because of this, I grew up thinking I was a night person.

That is until I wasn’t around my Dad and wasn’t needed to work those nighttime shifts anymore. And it was then that I quickly realized I am at my best in the morning and not in the evening.

It took me awhile to figure this out, but when you know your “power time”, you know when you’re at your best.

In this episode, I’ll help you determine your “power time” so that you can capitalize on these hours when you are at your best.

What makes Amazon different? What are the secrets to their success? Bill Carr would say they aren’t really secrets, but it does take innovative management. Bill is a former Amazon executive and the co-author with Colin Bryer of Working Backwards: Insights, Stories and Secrets from Inside Amazon. Bill and Kevin dig deep into the idea of working backwards. It starts with leaders being customer-obsessed, finding out what they want/need and work backward. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. We meet with lots of folks each day, many of whom are not our customers. So, we need to go out of our way to think about the customer. Bill also shares the four characteristics that help define the company culture and how this applies to leaders at any level.

Benchmarks are great. They help give us a way to measure our progress and/or success as compared to others and they also give us something for which to aim.

Do you have to? or Do you want to? We all have a choice. Larry Olsen is the author of Get a Vision and Live It. He joins Kevin to discuss how people can learn to change their attitudes to align with their visions. Our brain makes decisions based on the past, not what the future holds; our growth is limited. We can’t change the past, but we can envision what we want our reality to be. You get what you think about. Prosperity is the here and now. It is the version that is ready for the moment about to happen. It is not based on the past, which can lead to disengagement or cynicism. Larry believes you are where you need to be to make great things happen.

The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say no to almost everything. You’ve gotta keep control of your time, and you can’t unless you say no. You can’t let people set your agenda in life.
– Warren Buffett

Now who am I to argue with Warren Buffett? I completely agree that we must be protective of our time and that how we spend our time is directly correlated to our success. And yet…I am not advocating that we immediately say NO to everything. It’s important to use judgement always in our decisions. And that when we do say no, we say it with love.

Tweet it out: To achieve our goals sometimes we must say no – but we can say no in a way that preserves relationships and future opportunities – that’s saying no with love. @KevinEikenberry

Ernest Hemingway said, “When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” Ximena Vengoechea thinks Ernest may be on to something. She is the author of Listen Like You Mean It: Reclaiming the Lost Art of True Connection. As a user researcher, she understands the importance of listening for understanding. This is true for product research and organizational success. Often, we find ourselves default listening. We are sort of paying attention, yet we don’t get the true experience or the emotions of the talker. Ximena tells Kevin we need to move to empathetic listening, which starts with the intention to listen. A listening mindset begins with humility, curiosity, and empathy. When we bring this to the table, not only are we better people, but we are also better leaders.

Leadership and change go hand in hand. However, we need to make sure it’s a positive change. Not only is today’s workforce demanding it, but organizations are also finding it profitable. Bill Novelli has spent time in the private and not-for-profit world. Today he is a professor in the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University and founded and oversees the Georgetown Business for Impact initiative. He joins Kevin to discuss his book, Good Business – the Talk, Fight, Win Way to Change the World. Bill shares examples of organizations making changes to create both social and monetary value. Wherever you are in the organization, you can make a positive social difference. Leadership is not about titles but having the courage in your convictions and the information to influence.

When I was growing up, most households only had one phone and it was usually in the kitchen. And teens spent alllll the time on that phone.

Today’s teens also spend a lot of time on the phone, as do most of us. These tiny devices consume so much of our time and attention, although we rarely use them anymore for what they were originally designed for – to TALK on them. And today, I’m reminding you of all of the reasons and benefits why the next time you pick up your phone, it should be to talk into it.

Relationships. They are critical for our mental health and they are how organizations succeed. Yet, many of us struggle to build solid connections. David Bradford and Carole Robin are the authors of CONNECT: Building Exceptional Relationships with Family, Friends and Colleagues. They join Kevin to discuss the importance of building exceptional relationships or at least moving along the continuum. There is a risk of being vulnerable. Yet, when we show up as ourselves (in an appropriate way), we have more impact. As a leader, we need to recognize feedback is a gift. We need to be willing to ask for, as well as offer help, so we can all behave in our best interest.

I recently received an email from the Principal of the High School that I attended, asking if I would help with a project.

As the students are getting ready to celebrate a COVID-style homecoming, the staff is asking alum to share messages of encouragement and support.

I was happy and honored to do this and today, I am sharing that message with you.

Defining your team’s purpose is not only important; it is pragmatic. Once you have the purpose, it is easier to decide when to collaborate and when individuals should act. Carlos Valdes-Dapena is a coach and the author of Lessons from Mars: How One Global Company Cracked the Code on High Performance Collaboration and Teamwork and Virtual Teams: Holding the Center When You Can’t Meet Face-to-Face. He joins Kevin to discuss why conventional approaches to making teams better don’t necessarily work. Through extensive research working directly with brands like M&M’s and Snickers, he found that you need to be intentional about collaboration. Leaders need to clarify why it matters and how individuals benefit from working together. This is especially true for achievement-driven people who are innately motivated to get stuff done.
