This is a special episode of the Remarkable Leadership podcast entitled My Remarkable Journey. Kevin sits down with Matt Blumberg to learn about his journey toward becoming the leader he is today. Matt is the CEO of Bolster, an on-demand executive talent marketplace. He believes humans like to keep learning and thinks about a career as a jungle gym, not a ladder. Do you work with any difficult people? Research indicates when we deal with difficult people, our creativity, productivity, and engagement suffer. Conflict and stress compromise our ability to think clearly and make sound decisions. Amy Gallo joins Kevin to share practical advice about how to deal with challenging relationships. She tells us that although we have more positive and/or neutral interactions in a day, we tend to focus on the negative. We should be more empathetic and come up with different reasons why/what motivates another’s behavior. We should also take a step back to see if we are the difficult person. This episode was recorded during Virtual LeaderCon 2022.

Key Points

  • Amy Gallo shares how to have better interactions, even if it is just getting to neutral.

How often do you feel stifled by all the red tape? Do you ever think you could get more done if your organization wasn’t so bureaucratic? Nick Sinai tells Kevin that bureaucracy is just organizations with rules and procedures. It does not have a positive or negative connotation. However, when we take the time to understand them, we can continue to improve them. Further, you don’t need to be an executive to get things done. When people take change on themselves, they build the momentum for change. Nick shares some bureaucratic hacks to get unstuck.

When we think about leadership development, we probably think about workshops, podcasts, white papers, and business books. We understand the importance of learning to benefit ourselves and our organizations. Unfortunately, after putting in a full day (or more) of work, we find we don’t have the energy to read novels. Melanie Bell joins Kevin to talk about how reading fiction can also help with our leadership development. Studies have indicated that different parts of our brains are activated when we read fiction vs. nonfiction. Further, business books break down the problem to the principle. In fiction, the characters are complicated so, we don’t just jump to conclusions. The stakes are lower, so we can take a breath and think about the situation.

Key Points

  • Melanie discusses why fiction can be powerful for leaders.
  • She shares how to translate fiction to leadership.
  • She provides advice on choosing a fictional book to read for leadership lessons.

Meet Melanie

  • Name: Melanie Bell

Brian Elliott joins Kevin to share findings of the change in work from research with his colleagues at the Future Forum and global case studies from leading companies such as Levi Strauss & Co., Genentech, Royal Bank of Canada, and IBM. For example, 74% of executives want to come back to the office three days a week or more. Only 23% of employees want the same thing. Are you frustrated because your hard work isn’t noticed? Are you looking to move up and don’t know how? Michael Wenderoth joins Kevin to discuss the mindsets we need to change to not only promote ourselves but also our teams. For example, politics aren’t bad; they are just a mechanism by which decisions are made. Power is not a bad word. We need to understand power and learn how to harness its energy. When we reject the idea of power, we are immediately at a disadvantage. We need to leverage power to accelerate our impact.

New customers are great, and to keep them we need to nurture the relationship and build trust. Jason Young tells Kevin that most decisions are based on emotion. So, to continue the relationship, it’s important to understand how the guest feels. This is true for both external customers and our teams. It’s easy to give a job title or description. We may be more connected than ever before; yet studies show we are also lonelier. Further, research indicates that for the first time, the emerging generation (Gen Z) is feeling more isolated and lonelier than the elderly population, and this was pre-Covid. Ryan Jenkins and Steven Van Cohen share with Kevin that we underestimate how much we need connection. When people show up lonely for work, they are 7x more likely to be disengaged, 5x more likely to miss work, and twice as likely to think about quitting their job. We need to be intentional about our connections and less transactional. This episode was recorded during our Mental Fitness Day, a Virtual LeaderCon event in April 2022.

Key Points

  • In this episode, Ryan and Steven discuss loneliness in the workplace.
  • They share the difference between loneliness and solitude.
  • They talk about belonging as an antidote to loneliness.

Micromanagement.

Leaders tell me all the time that they’re not doing it, but if I talk to their teams, I often hear something different.

And here’s the thing, the other person decides if you’re micromanaging.

It’s wonderful to think if you’re not. But the reality is, if the other person, the person you’re leading or managing thinks you are, then you are.

Because micromanagement is relative, right? What feels like micromanagement when we’re brand new in a job is quite different than what it might feel like when we’ve been doing a job for a long time. Because what we even need as the employee is quite different.

You could be working with two different people, leading them in exactly the same way. One of them thinks you’re doing great. The other thinks you’re micromanaging because micromanagement is relative.

Micromanagement is also personal. We have different experiences in our past, different sort of buttons that can get pushed by our boss. And so we have to be clear about what does it look like to the other person.

If we want to avoid this problem right now, this doesn’t mean that we might not need to provide guidance.

Does it mean we don’t need to provide coaching? Does it mean that sometimes people are messing up and we need to give them more input?

It doesn’t mean any of that stuff because all of that might even be welcome. But micromanagement is something else.

So how do we overcome it? Well, there’s lots of things we can do to overcome micromanagement.

  1. Talk with each team member.
  2. Set clearer expectations for the work and your interactions with others.

The main thing I want you to remember from this short video is this, that even if you don’t think you’re micromanaging, you might be because the other person decides.

Tweet it out: You may think you aren’t micromanaging, but others decide whether you are or not. @KevinEikenberry
