The squeaky wheel gets the oil or so it goes. And while it seems like everyone is so negative these days, that’s not really the case. Unfortunately, the negative ones are often the loudest and have the biggest consequences as a result – increased stress and decreased productivity just to name a few!

In this episode, I am going to ask five questions to help you in thinking about and managing the negative personalities in your life.

I often get this question from leaders – both new and seasoned alike: Should we be friends with our teammates or not?

And while it’s certainly a valid and good question, my answer is to flip it and instead…

Make RELATEDNESS your goal.

What does that mean?

Leaders at all levels understand you achieve success when you manage for both performance and health. But, how to do you change your organization to achieve that success? Kevin is joined by Bill Schaninger, co-author of Beyond Performance 2.0: A Proven Approach to Leading Large Scale Change and a Senior Partner at McKinsey. Bill and his colleagues found that the companies struggling focused on quarterly earnings. To succeed organizations should place equal emphasis on not only making money but how they make it. The change management strategies Bill shares are based on more than 5 million data points drawn from 2,000 companies globally over 15 years. He recognizes that you need people inside to change, so effective change leaders first create a clear and compelling change story.

In this episode, Bill talks about 1. How we help people see the change as personal. 2 Organizational health index. 3. How to use these ideas if you are a middle manager or lead a small company?

Tweet it out: The self-aware leader is a better leader. Look for ways to understand yourself better each day – just like you look in the mirror to see your external appearance. @KevinEikenberry

Managers have the opportunity and the responsibility to lead. Lisa Haneberg joins Kevin to discuss the 2nd edition of 10 Steps to Be A Successful Manager. Lisa recognizes people in the middle get it done and “manager” is not a negative word it is a job. Leadership is when you step up and do what others aren’t doing. Lisa wrote this second edition, not because leadership and management have changed, but the way we convey the messages have changed. The second edition is also aligned with ATD survey-based research on social skills. She shares practical ways to become a successful manager, like tapping into your team’s intrinsic motivation and being ready to flex as the normal, chaotic business happens.

In this episode, Lisa discusses 1. Clear behavioral expectations. 2. Team agility. 3. Accountability vs. Engagement.

We currently live in a low trust culture. And we know trust is important for leaders, in good times and in times of stress, disruption, and turn-around. Kevin is joined by Joel Peterson, Chairman of JetBlue Airways, Founding Partner of Peterson Partners, and author of The 10 Laws of Trust. Joel shares some of those laws of trust and understands that organizations succeed when leaders and colleagues trust each other. Instead of worrying about micromanaging, jealousy, and office politics, teams are more creative and have a positive impact on the bottom line.

In this episode, Joel shares 1. Organizational levels of trust. 2. The connection between expectations and trust. 3. The role of respectful conflict and trust. 4. How to fix a breach of trust.

I'm talking about vulnerability - it is an important leadership topic that no one likes to talk about. That seems like a good reason to talk about it!
