You’ve likely heard this saying:

What gets measured gets done.

While it’s an oversimplification, there is a lot of truth in this saying. And interestingly enough, one of the areas where we spend an increasing amount of time is meetings. And do you have any meeting metrics that you are tracking?

You likely don’t. And even if you do, in this episode, I am sharing a new meeting metric that you likely aren’t tracking but should be for many reasons. I am also sharing how to implement this simple yet effective metric.

From This Episode:

  • This strategy is just one of kind of ideas that we share in my newest book, The Long-Distance Teammate. If you, or a member of your team, is working remotely (and who doesn’t know at least someone who is these days!), you won’t want to miss this powerful book. Learn more and order your copy here.

Nothing elevates performance more than a great coach. And the performance of your team reflects the coach. Bill Eckstrom is the co-author of The Coaching Effect: What Great Leaders Do to Increase Sales, Enhance Performance, and Sustain Growth (with Sarah Wirth) and joins Kevin to discuss both quality and quantity of coaching. We need to understand where coaches are spending their time. Bill discusses growth rings and how they are reflective of environments that promote or hinder growth. Leaders at any level need to understand the necessity of challenging people out of their comfort zone to create high-growth organizations.

The questions we ask determine the answers we find – and therefore the decisions we make.

And in this episode, I am asking you the most important remote work question…

Are you “working from home” or are you a great remote teammate?

Is it the journey, or is it the destination? The role of a leader is getting to the destination (sales, profits, product development). Walt Rakowich believes the most important part of leadership is the journey and what happens along the way. Walt is the author of TRANSFLUENCE: How to Lead with Transformative Influence in Today’s Climates of Change. Walt and Kevin discuss transformative influence and Walt shares stories about his journey. There is a time and place for leaders to be vulnerable and acknowledge the details their team understands and works through daily. By overcoming fear and pride, we can empower our team and build trust. When leaders recognize they have a transformational influence on their team, they find opportunity, embrace challenges, and make their organizations and communities greater than ever.

One of my all-time favorite Musicals is Fiddler on the Roof, and one of the famous songs from it is Sunrise, Sunset.

Here are part of the lyrics:

Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears

The song talks about how our lives are flying by and the older I get, the truer this is.

And while each day is still about sunrise, sunset – a daily rhythm – and life is an accumulation of days, I have an important question for you:

How do you start and end your days?

Remote work isn’t new. Technology has allowed organizations to have offices not only on different coasts but in different countries. We have started to work across time zones and cultures. In 2018, Kevin Eikenberry and Wayne Turmel published the Long-Distance Leader and reminded leaders the principles didn’t change, just the location. In March of 2019, there was a huge shift to remote work; much of it unplanned. They found there was a difference between working from home and being a productive remote teammate. Wayne, co-founder of the Remote Leadership Institute, joins Kevin to discuss their latest book, The Long-Distance Teammate: Stay Engaged and Connected While Working Anywhere. There is a difference between being just a team member and a teammate. We need to be more intentional to create connections and take responsibility for our growth. Wayne shares ideas for leaders and discusses some of the challenges we may see in 2021. We are not going back to the way things were.

Can we?

Should we?

Both questions are important and the difference between the two is just one small word. But that small word makes a significant difference in how you answer the question.

In this episode, I’m helping you to think about this distinction with a few thoughts and maybe a couple of other questions.

Tweet it out: Can you do something vs. should you do that thing. Likely you’ll be better served to ask both questions before you decide. @KevinEikenberry

Do you feel like a fraud? Are you waiting for your team to question why you are leading them? If it makes you feel better, you aren’t alone. In fact, studies show that 70% of people feel like an imposter at some point in their professional careers. Rita Clifton shares that none of us know everything. She is the author of Love Your Imposter: Be Your Best Self, Flaws and All. Rita and Kevin discuss the imposter syndrome and how you can acknowledge your fear (versus hiding from it) to make you better. Rita also debunks the myth ‘fake it until you make it’. When we share our vulnerabilities, we help others grow, making your team more successful.

I grew up on a farm, so we spread a lot of things. But today we are talking about what we are spreading as leaders.

Because our words, our attitudes and our energy are all contagious. And it’s important that we’re spreading the right thing.

Tweet it out: Your words, attitude and energy are contagious. What are you spreading? @KevinEikenberry
