Gender bias and inequality in the workplace is not a new problem. Despite its longstanding presence, this problem continues to linger, impacting the professional growth and opportunities of women worldwide. Only 12% of paid executive officers in publicly held companies are women. Andrea Kramer and Alton Harris join Kevin to discuss their approach to addressing this problem. They argue that traditional anti-bias training programs are ineffective. You can’t tell someone, don’t do that. Instead, they suggest eliminating exclusionary behaviors and biases from organizational policies and practices. They also debunk five gender myths, including the idea that women lack ambition, are less self-confident, and cannot handle risks and leadership roles.
00:00 Introduction
04:41 Statistics of gender inequality
07:19 Reasons for the persistence of gender inequality
10:27 Suggestions for improving the effectiveness of training programs
12:59 Introduction of the five gender myths
18:16 Overview of the four parts of the PATH program
25:59 Impact of the pandemic on gender inequality
32:58 Book recommendations
36:20 Closing
Their Story: Andrea S. Kramer (Andie) and Alton B. Harris (Al) are distinguished attorneys, married to each other and co-authors of Beyond Bias: The PATH to End Gender Inequality at Work. For decades, Andie and Al have tackled gender bias in the workplace through speaking, workshops, articles, blog posts, podcasts, one-on-one counseling, and engagements with national and international business and professional organizations. They have appeared in The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, The Huffington Post, The Chicago Tribune, Fast Company, Crain's, and many other publications. They provide practical techniques that women, men, and organizations can use to prevent the gender stereotypes and the biases that flow from them from slowing down or derailing women's careers.

About this video : In this episode of Remarkable TV, leadership expert Kevin Eikenberry discusses the importance of being comfortable with saying "I don't know." As a leader, it's not necessary to have all the answers, and in fact, being willing to admit when you don't know something can make you a better leader. Kevin explores how saying "I don't know" creates space for others to contribute, models a culture of learning, prevents others from overly relying on you for answers, and fosters collaboration and connection within your team. By valuing the contributions of others and being open to learning together, you can unleash your remarkable potential as a leader.
Regardless of title, we are all leaders, and we are all followers. Doug Lennick and Chuck Wachendorfer join Kevin to discuss mentorship, leadership, and taking action to create change. They share that we get to choose to be our ideal selves rather than waiting for someone else to fix things. By becoming better leaders, we can positively influence those around us both personally and professionally.

To effectively manage the chaos that often arises in growing organizations, leaders must have the necessary tools and strategies at their disposal. Patrick Thean recently joined Kevin to discuss the concept of rhythm and its ability to provide a framework for handling chaos. By establishing a regular cadence and implementing systems and routines that promote smoother operations, leaders can create a sense of predictability even in the face of unexpected challenges. Rhythm can take many forms, such as weekly meetings or quarterly strategy sessions, and is essential for effective planning and execution.

Work is part of our lives, and it can be difficult. Melissa Swift thinks we can do better for the world and make a living and it doesn’t have to suck. She joins Kevin to discuss how work can be transformed to be less challenging and more successful. According to Melissa, work has intensified, and we are facing the psychological equivalent of the early days of factory work, which is indirectly killing us. Organizations need to re-engineer how their team operates. If work doesn’t suck, you will have better productivity.
The Long-Distance Team. Remote leadership experts, Kevin Eikenberry and Wayne Turmel, help leaders navigate the new world of remote and hybrid teams to design the culture they desire for their teams and organizations in their new book!
Master the art of effortless focus and unleash your productivity potential. **** Your Remarkable Day: https://kevineikenberry.com/newsletters
In this episode, Kevin discusses the power of focus and shares valuable tips to make focus more natural and effortless. He compares the futile act of pushing a string to our attempts at being focused, only to find ourselves distracted and frustrated. Kevin introduces a new perspective, equating focus to the center of attention, just like the focal point in a great photograph. By understanding the importance of why we're focusing and reconnecting with the meaning behind our tasks, we can shift from forcing focus to choosing focus. Kevin emphasizes that when we align our interests and attention, focus becomes a natural outcome.

Marc Lesser joins Kevin to discuss the importance of clarity, accountability, and compassion in creating relationships and successful teams. Lesser believes the business world has finally caught up with the idea that humanity is critical for success. Effective leaders must be confident and have a vision. In the spring of 2020, the way we worked changed. It might not have been pretty and look at what we accomplished. Heather McGowan tells Kevin the relationships between individuals and organizations changed. More people are asking where work fits in their lives. As such, leaders need to shift their perspectives and become more empathetic. By developing empathy, leaders can better understand themselves and connect with their team, customers, and stakeholders, leading to greater collaboration, innovation, and success.

We know that stress levels are high today. Karen Dillon and Rob Cross found that it’s not only because of your macrostressors like a job loss, death, or illness. Karen tells Kevin that there is more microstress due to our connectivity. These are the little stressors that accumulate and lead to significant negative impacts on our mental and physical well-being. Karen shares some language we can use to describe microstress and how we can reduce their effects.
