WHATEVER. When we use this word to answer a question, we aren't deciding or, we are passing the buck. Richard Moran believes that when we use the word Whatever we may feel helpless or lack control, and we surrender. Often, we have more control than we think. So, when we make decisions, both the big and the small ones that seem insignificant, we need to be intentional. The action we take follows the intent.

Key Points

  • Richard Moran shares his research on trends about the word Whatever and how it relates to decision-making.
  • He discusses how Whatever can impact leadership by creating a culture of indifference.

Meet Richard

  • Name: Richard Moran
  • His Story: Richard Moran is the author of Never Say Whatever: How Small Decisions Make a Big Difference. He is a Silicon Valley-based business leader, workplace pundit, bestselling author, venture capitalist, former CEO, and college president. He is best known for his series of humorous business books beginning with the bestselling, Never Confuse a Memo with Reality, and is credited with starting the genre of “Business Bullet Books.”
  • Worth Mentioning: Richard Moran holds a Ph.D. in organizational behavior, but his work is not academic. Research is important and he believes what is just as critical are the observations one can make by being in the trenches of business. His observations are candid, humorous, and true. His body of work includes 10 books about using commonsense in business. He is the host of the CBS syndicated radio program, “In the Workplace.” Rich has appeared on CNN, NPR, and most major media outlets.

We now have up to 5 generations in the workplace. Baby boomers, Gen Z, Millennials, you name it. Each generation views the world based on the time frame they moved through history; what were the popular tv shows, what new technology was released, and what was happening worldwide. This creates a 'generation gap' that is not necessarily negative; it is an opportunity to learn. Dr. Tim Elmore joins Kevin to discuss how we can get the most out of each generation vs. putting up with each other. At the end of the day, every generation wants to be led with humility, respect, and curiosity.

Key Points

  • Dr. Tim Elmore discusses the factors leading to the personalities of each generation.
  • He shares how we can have the generation conversation without oversimplifying or stereotyping.
  • He talks about managing the tension in each generation.

This episode is about how to create clarity in communication, whether it's for ourselves or for others. Kevin stresses the importance of clarity for building confidence, setting direction, and increasing productivity and momentum. He provides four pieces of advice for creating clarity: (1) be clear yourself before creating clarity for others, (2) communicate more clearly by picking your words carefully and ensuring that the other person has understood your message, (3) clarify your intention to avoid confusion and misinterpretation, and (4) repeat without being repetitious to connect the dots and reinforce the message. The speaker suggests that creating greater clarity in expectations, direction, and boundaries can be the most important skill for a leader.

Good leadership is essential to success, matters, and is not about you. Dr. John A. White has experienced this firsthand through 6 decades of leading and learning. He stresses that a leader should not focus on their success, instead they should put their team first and create an environment of listen, learn, love, then lead. This approach is not only beneficial for the leader, but also the team and the organization.

Key Points

  • Dr. John A. White shares stories that led him to write the book and the lessons he learned along the way.
  • He discusses the difference between being a leader and being a manager.
  • He gives practical advice to leading today.

Meet John

  • Name: Dr. John A. White
  • His Story: Dr. John A. White is the author of Why it Matters: Reflections on Practical Leadership. The North Central Association of Colleges and Universities called the decade of the White’s leadership of the University of Arkansas transformational, noting significant improvements occurred in all dimensions of the university. During his 6-year service as Georgia Tech's engineering dean, the college advanced from being ranked 11th to being ranked 3rd by U.S. News & World Report.
  • Worth Mentioning: After stepping down as chancellor of the University of Arkansas, Dr. White was encouraged by faculty colleagues to offer a course on leadership. Though he'd been an engineering educator for forty-five years by then and had never taught a course that wasn't based on equations, he was intrigued by the idea of sharing his leadership journey with students. For the following nine years, Dr. White taught Leadership Practices and Principles to seniors and graduate students from every discipline, introducing them to fifteen guest leaders over each semester and holding in-depth, frank, and often emotional conversations about the challenges, joys, heartbreaks, and diversity of approaches to successful leadership.
