How can we as leaders help our team members if they are feeling burned out?

As leaders, while we don’t like to admit it, we can sometimes be the cause of employee burnout.

The good news is that while we might be the cause (or at least a small part of it), we can ALSO BE the solution.

Because as a leader, it’s our responsibility to understand its existence and help reduce it.

And in today’s episode, I am giving you specific tips to help you do just that.

Tweet it out: Employee burnout is real. As a leader you have a responsibility to understand its existence and help reduce it if you want higher productivity and commitment. @KevinEikenberry

Burnout levels at work are on the rise. Bruce Daisley found that folks were quitting their jobs with no plan because the uncertainty was better than their current situation. Bruce is the author of Eat, Sleep, Work, Repeat: 30 Hacks for Bringing Joy to Your Job. He shares with Kevin that seeing unhappiness at work firsthand led him to want to figure out how people could connect with their jobs again. At the end of the day, regardless of where you work and your title, satisfaction from doing a good job is the same. Leaders need to get real about burnout. Bruce’s hacks are a result of science, research, data, and psychology. He shares what he discovered and offers examples to help give our work more meaning and find that joy.

In this episode, Bruce shares ideas about 1. The digital sabbath ad norms of engagement. 2. Social meetings. 3. Depersonalizing criticism and feedback.

In today’s episode, I’m finding a leadership lesson from a question that my wife asked me recently about one of my favorite things.

Her co-worker asked for recommendations on brands of tea to try and since I am a serious tea lover, Lori knew that I would have an answer.

What does tea have to do with leadership? Find out in this episode!

Four-hundred years ago Francis Bacon presented the scientific method, where the workhorse is the experiment. Now is the time we move experimentation beyond an engineering process. We need to think about it as a corporate discipline. Kevin is joined by Stefan Thomke to discuss his latest book, Experimentation Works: The Surprising Power of Business Experiments. Leaders face uncertainty throughout their organizations. This includes the rollout of new products to customer satisfaction to marketing. They need to move past their prejudice, bias, and observations and test against reality for greater success. Stefan shares examples of large-scale experiments and why he thinks this should be mainstream in all businesses.

In this episode, Stefan discusses 1. Business experimentation and examples. 2. Myths of experimentation. 3. Cause and effect.

As a leader, there is a lot on our shoulders and much is asked of us. In my blog posts, emails, articles and even here in this series, I remind you regularly of the responsibilities that we have as leaders.

But today, I’m not talking about any of that. I am talking about encouragement and I’m giving it to…YOU.

Tweet it out: Everyone needs encouragement, even you. Hold your head up knowing you are encouraged by someone (and if you don’t know who, assume it is me), today. @KevinEikenberry

How can you build as much life into the time that you have? Tom Rath thought about this as he was writing his latest book, Life’s Great Question: Discover How You Best Contribute to the World. Tom is also the author of How Full is Your Bucket StrengthFinders 2.0 and recently co-founded a publishing company. He told Kevin looking at your strengths is a good starting point for personal reflection. The challenge becomes how you put your strengths into the world. Tom asks us to think about how we contribute to our teams because that may be far more effective than talent. He discusses the Contribify model and explains that when we work with our teams and set expectations of how each of us will contribute, we will have greater success.

In this episode, Tom shares 1. Contribify Model. 2. Level setting contributions and remote teams. 3. Advice to leaders about questions and listening.
