Change. I’m sure you have heard that the world is changing faster today. Henry De Sio would tell you it’s not just fast; it’s explosive. Everyone is in the change game. Henry is a former deputy assistant to President Obama and is the author of The Playmaker Changebook: The New Physics of Leadership in a World of Explosive Change. Henry and Kevin discuss the new game. Teams are no longer operating in silos with one leader. Today, there are different teams and different leaders based on the situation. You collect your talent around challenges and opportunities. Everyone can step into their bigness. Further, there is a premium on empathy and bringing together people to drive success.

Awhile back, I wrote a post on LinkedIn and had a blinding flash of the obvious. I asked a question at the end of the post and the post got more engagement and comments than ever before. I went back to see how often I ended with a question. And as I suspected, it wasn’t very often!

This was a major lesson for me and I’m talking about it in the podcast episode because I think it’s an important lessons for all leaders as well.

Leading and managing. Mark Williams will tell you both are important parts of your job. However, people are promoted because they do their job well, yet don’t have the necessary tools to be good leaders. Mark is the author of, Lead Don’t Manage: 12 Lessons in Creating a Leadership Culture Base on Core Values. You can manage the day-to-day activities of your team, like attendance and workflow. However, to lead, you need to know it’s about the people that work for you and with you. He shares with Kevin the importance of purposeful, regular, and consistent communication. Your expectations often are born from your values, and you owe it to yourself and your team to share. Mark also talks about investing time in relationships throughout your organization, as it is the relationships that allow you to accomplish more.

In this episode, Mark:

  1. Shares his experiences in a leadership role.
  2. Discusses how individual values and relationships with your team go hand in hand.
  3. Talks about leadership alliances, both in-person and remote.

Does your leadership change the organization? For the better? This is the question Jonathan Raymond asked himself and had an aha moment. Jonathan is the author of Good Authority: How to Become the Leader Your Team Is Waiting For and joins Kevin to discuss the mindset shift leaders at all levels need to make. Your team does not need a leader who knows everything and solves all the problems. Your job as a leader is to think strategically about the organization. Your job as a leader is to create the emotional conditions for your team to grow. Let them do the jobs they were hired to do.

Opportunities have expiration dates.

I saw this quote recently, and I wish I could remember who/where to attribute this quote to because I instantly loved it. There is a lot of truth in it.

Let’s think about opportunity for a minute…

Have you ever missed an opportunity because you were unaware of it?

Have you ever missed an opportunity because you let it fall down your priority list?

Have you ever missed an opportunity because you delayed, or were stuck in analysis paralysis?

At least one is a yes.. guaranteed.

While there are many opportunities that we know about, there are many that we don’t notice…because we aren’t looking. In this episode, I’m sharing two big ideas to help you take advantage of all of the opportunities that come your way.

Tweet it out: Waiting has implications because opportunities have expiration dates. @KevinEikenberry

Good leaders take away the “me” factor. Yet, before you successfully lead, you need to know who you are. Minter Dial suggests we take the time (and it takes time) to recognize our strengths, weaknesses, fears, and triggers. When you have this information, you can supplement yourself. Minter’s latest book is You Lead, How Being Yourself Makes You A Better Leader. He suggests that you cannot control how you are perceived, but you can control your awareness. When you show your whole self at work, you encourage your team they can be themselves leading to more trust and success.

Are you present? Are you learning from your journey, especially when you stumble? Scott O’Neil recognizes we all struggle and need gentle reminders to be present, whether this is professionally or personally. Scott joins Kevin to discuss his book, Be Where Your Feet Are: Seven Principles to Keep you Present, Grounded and Thriving. As the CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which includes the Philadelphia 76ers (NBA) and the New Jersey Devils (NHL), he knows you win some you lose some. If you recognize where you are at, you have the opportunity to grow, go outside of your comfort zone, and be more prepared. We are about instant gratification, and we choose to take a long view and ask ourselves what we want to be and who we want to serve; it will change the way we work (for the better).
