A caring leader cares about the people and the outcomes. A caring leader moves beyond the surface and focuses on the development of the team and continuously improving. Bob DeKoch and Phil Clampitt join Kevin to discuss the caring leader. Caring leaders ask how they can help by removing barriers or discovering a plan of action, not doing the work. Their mindset shifts from who has the answer to how do we come up with a better outcome?

Key Points

Bob DeKoch and Phil Clampitt define shallow vs. deep caring.

They discuss the connection between: caring and uncertainty, caring and collaboration, and caring and learning.

They share how to turn pushback into progress.

Meet Bob and Phil

  • Name: Bob DeKoch and Phil Clampitt
  • Their Story: Bob DeKoch and Philip Clampitt are the authors of Leading with Care in a Tough World: Beyond Servant Leadership. Bob is currently the founder of the leadership consulting firm, Limitless, www.lmtlss.biz. Rising to senior executive roles in numerous organizations, Bob has developed and put into practice the many teachings in his books. He has over four decades of experience across major market sectors: the construction services and real estate development business, the pulp and paper industry, the beverage industry, and the chemical industry. Phil (Ph.D., University of Kansas) is the Blair Endowed Chair of Communication at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. He was previously designated the Hendrickson Named Professor of Business. Phil has won numerous awards for his teaching and scholarship. His students started calling him “Dr. So What” because he asked, “So what?” so often, as a prod to encourage them to think about the implications of their ideas (see www.DrSoWhat.com).
  • Worth Mentioning: DeKoch and Clampitt have worked in a partnership for over thirty years. In addition to Leading with Care in a Tough World: Beyond Servant Leadership, they have co-authored Transforming Leaders into Progress Makers: Leadership for the 21st Century and Embracing Uncertainty: The Essence of Leadership. Our words matter. We live in conversation. The words we hear are filtered with our biases, opinions, and prejudices, so we need to question and understand. • Storytelling—Acknowledging and investigating the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves and others.
  • Collaborating—Exploring the way our stories interact with other people’s stories.
  • Creating—Cocreating possibilities and discovering unforeseen solutions to sticky problems.
  • Committing—Coordinating our actions with others to get things done.

He talks about the roles of emotions, facts, and opinions in our stories.

He discusses advocacy and inquiry.

There is no shortage of places to find information. You have social channels, news outlets, and the internet. Ross Dawson joins Kevin to discuss information overload and how it can be perceived as a problem or an opportunity.

  • Purpose - understanding why we want information at all, so we can understand how to use it well.
  • Framing - connecting all the information we encounter to make sense of it, build knowledge, and develop expertise.
  • Filtering - being able to see what is useful to us and discarding everything else.
  • Attention - intentionally selecting where we direct our awareness, not just through focus, but in exploring and regenerating ourselves.
  • Synthesis - the ultimate human capability of connecting the dots to understand the world, see opportunities, and make better decisions.
  • He discusses practical tools we can use for filtering.

Lori Michele Leavitt shares with Kevin that clarity in direction, strategy, or change has two parts: to get clear and to be clear. It is important to stop and understand what is happening. Once we realize our fears, we can understand the fears of our team and create a message that will inspire them.

Key Points

  • Lori Michele Leavitt discusses the importance of the pause.
  • She defines clarity and shares tips to become clearer.
  • She talks about how clarity can relate to a pivot or momentum.

She is the founder and president of Abrige Corp., which offers the Aligned Momentum (A.M.)® leadership operating system to help managers lead better.
  • Worth Mentioning: Lori speaks globally on catalyzing momentum, leading, pivoting, and workplace culture change.
