Defining your team’s purpose is not only important; it is pragmatic. Once you have the purpose, it is easier to decide when to collaborate and when individuals should act. Carlos Valdes-Dapena is a coach and the author of Lessons from Mars: How One Global Company Cracked the Code on High Performance Collaboration and Teamwork and Virtual Teams: Holding the Center When You Can’t Meet Face-to-Face. He joins Kevin to discuss why conventional approaches to making teams better don’t necessarily work. Through extensive research working directly with brands like M&M’s and Snickers, he found that you need to be intentional about collaboration. Leaders need to clarify why it matters and how individuals benefit from working together. This is especially true for achievement-driven people who are innately motivated to get stuff done.

In a fast-paced (and often remote working) world, we seem to run our days on “transactions” – short-term, project-driven tasks.

And while transactions get things done in the short term, relationships are built and nourished on interactions.

And in a remote working world, relationships are even harder to maintain. That’s why it’s important that we balance transactions with interactions.

Learn the difference and therefore how to recognize this balance in your life from this episode.

From This Episode:

  • Our new book, The Long-Distance Teammate, addresses strategies and techniques for improving the relationships (from interactions) in your virtual team. Learn more and order your copy here.

Do you ask for the help you need? As a leader, we are often self-reliant. The success of our teams and organizations rests on our shoulders, we better be the ones making the decisions. Todd Palmer hit rock bottom and needed to redefine success. Todd is CEO/Entrepreneur of Diversified Industrial Staffing and the author of From Suck to Success: A Guide for Extraordinary Entrepreneurship. He joins Kevin to talk about his journey of self-awareness and shifting mindsets. He needed to ask for help and to become accountable for his decisions. Once he got over the fear of failure and recognized it as a learning opportunity, he was able to shift the culture of his company. Todd also shares hiring advice and how things have changed (or not) since the pandemic.

In this episode, I’m telling an old story about a farmer and his stallion. And while I like stories just as much as anyone, this is more than just a story.

This is a lesson on the power of perspective.

Often, we see grit as something hard-nosed. However, Darrin Gray believes our grit should be fueled by joy. Darrin serves as Chief Marketing Officer at Athletes in Action and leads AIA’s NFL Advisory Council. He started in the newspaper business, where he felt he was creating a community. He has carried this idea of community and building a team throughout his career. A winning team isn’t about themselves but is a coalition of the willing. These are individuals who not only want to become better (players, leaders, parents) but are willing to help each other build the best version of themselves. Leaders not only need self-awareness, but a mindset and heartset to meet people where they are.

In the world today, people are running hard and fast, many so focused on taking care of others – be that their children, spouse, clients, teammates, students or their patients – that they aren’t taking the time to take care of themselves.

It’s gotten so bad, that I recently read about a nursing school that added a program to their nursing curriculum on the importance of and how to take better care of ourselves.

Self care is vital to our health and our success and our ability to have an outward focus and to take care of others.

In this episode, I’m sharing some quick tips to help you make it easier for you to take care of yourself.

Tweet it out: Self-care isn’t selfish. You can’t give your best to others when you aren’t at your best. @KevinEikenberry

As of today, I cannot predict the future of work – for you or for your business.

But I do know one thing.

Whatever that future holds, work is going to be different…again.

I do not believe we will ever return to work as we knew it in 2019. I predict that we will have an amalgamation of different forms of flexible work.

– Some companies will send all of their employees back all at once.
– Some will send half now and half later.
– Some will allow their employees to choose where they want to work.

There will be many options and each organization’s choice will very likely look a little different.

So, what can you do now to prepare for the future world of work today?

In this episode, I’m providing a few steps that leaders and teammates can take to prepare for flexible work.

Tweet it out: Prepare for the future today – even if you don’t know exactly what it will look like (and you don’t). @KevinEikenberry

From This Episode:

  • Whether you are a teammate or you are the leader of the team, The Long-Distance Teammate, can help you to prepare for this new future of flexible work. Learn more here.

There have been many discussions about the future of work. Will robots be able to do everything? For most of us, 2020 accelerated that future and creating a need for new mindsets and strategies. Jeff Schwartz believes we aren’t going back to the way things were and we have the opportunity to set a new direction. Jeff is the co-author of Work Disrupted: Opportunity, Resilience, and Growth in the Accelerated Future of Work. Jeff shares with Kevin that to understand 21st-century careers, we need to be working with new maps. We have choices in what our future looks like, so how do we work with everything we have available (includes physical space and technology).
