Belonging is a leadership conversation. Leaders have a choice in how they lead, connect, and invite. Brad Deutser believes the invite is the most important and is often the missing piece. Brad joins Kevin to discuss human-centered leadership. He shares 5 rules of belonging, which is how we should think about human-centered leadership. These include, turn into the power, listen without labels, choose identity over purpose, and challenge everything. Brad believes that belonging is not only good and right, but also a business imperative as research shows that it drives satisfaction, engagement, and retention, and people are willing to give up salary to be part of an organization where they feel like they belong.

One hundred years of research tells us that a bump in salary does not impact employee engagement. In fact, MIT recently published findings showing that how appreciated employees feel has three times more influence on their decision to stay or leave a job than compensation. Not only does this reduce the cost of turnover, but companies that pay attention to their human capital outperform others. Dr. Paul White joins Kevin to discuss the 5 Languages of Appreciation in the workplace. These include Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Tangible Gifts, and Physical Touch. The implementation of appreciation isn't a top-down process. It starts with education, creating a shared language among team members, and then grows naturally. It's about connecting people and recognizing them for who they are, not just their work.
