We find purpose in life through our work. We spend half of our waking life at work. Wouldn’t it be great to find purpose and meaning while getting stuff done? Dr. Roger Hall is the author of Staying Happy, Being Productive: The Big 10 Things Successful People Do. As a psychologist, he has been able to study the lives of successful people over 25 years. He has found that there are ten common habits of his most successful clients. Roger trains leaders to monitor and manage their thinking. He shares with Kevin if you discipline your thinking, emotions will follow, and then behavior. This can improve not only your life but the lives of your family or team.

In this episode, Dr. Hall discusses:

  1. Thought life.
  2. Sleep and rest life.
  3. Work life.

While enjoying a late-night snack, Raúl Sánchez and Dan Bullock came to the realization everyone sees the same pattern in the stars. Other places and cultures may label it differently, yet they see the same alignment. They wanted to look at patterns in communication. As organizations become more global, communication becomes that much more important. This holds for public speaking, writing e-mails, or negotiating contracts. Sánchez and Bullock are the authors of How to Communicate Effectively with Anyone, Anywhere. They discuss what is implied in conversation/writing and who is responsible for the messaging. In the end, it isn’t about us. As leaders, we are more effective if we use positive language and present the information for more than one sense (ethos, pathos, logos).

In this episode, Bullock and Sánchez discuss:

  1. Overall principles of effective communication.
  2. Global English.

It is important to understand what drives you to get out of bed in the morning. It is just as important to understand the motivation of your team. Christopher Coultas, along with his team at Leadership Worth Following, is the author of Driven Not Drained: Discover Your Path to Career Happiness, Effectiveness, and Influence. Chris shares the six components of the DriV model, which was designed to understand the why behind the what. With each component, there are competing priorities. For example, if you score high in productivity, you get your energy by doing things. This can become an issue as you move up the corporate ladder and find that you are delegating more tasks. Chris suggests understanding your drivers and drainers can help you find greater satisfaction in your job. Knowing what drives and drains your team can lead to more productivity and a better bottom line.

In this episode, Kevin and Chris discuss:

  1. Driven vs. drained.
  2. Drained vs. burnout.
  3. The DriV model.
  4. Team culture and drivers.

What is the culture of your organization? It’s a fair question and can be puzzling. We attribute an unengaged workforce or misalignment of values to the culture. Yet, we seem to fall short of building the culture we want. Mario Moussa and Derek Newberry are the authors of The Culture Puzzle: Harnessing the Forces That Drive Your Organization’s Success. They share with Kevin that, too often, we think of culture as an afterthought. We share our vision, build the team, and then create the culture. However, culture happens when you put the people together. Culture is about the stories. Culture is dynamic and fluid and can change overnight (just think back to March 2020). They share the four forces that drive culture: vision, interest, habit, and innovation. They also recognize that anyone can influence culture.

In this episode, Mario and Derek discuss

  1. Anthropology and organizational culture.
  2. Misconceptions about culture.
  3. 4 forces that drive culture.
  4. Thoughts about culture in a post pandemic world.

Are you exhausted? Maybe you are feeling a bit cynical? These can be signs of burnout. Paula Davis defines burnout as the manifestation over time of chronic workplace stress. Paula is the author of BEATING BURNOUT AT WORK: Why Teams Hold the Secret to Well-Being and Resilience. She tells Kevin that pre-pandemic, we were suffering high levels of burnout and, it has only accelerated during the pandemic. Although we typically associate burnout at the individual level, Davis suggests that this is an organizational issue. Leaders first need to recognize their role in causing or preventing burnout. You can influence change at the team level, where leaders can do small things that create a culture of well-being.

In this episode, Paula:

  1. Differentiates burnout vs. stress.
  2. Shares why team are the secret.
  3. Talks about how to diagnose burnout.
