When we want to make a lasting impact and move beyond “What’s in it for me?” to “What’s in it for we?” we live the life of a steward. David York shares with Kevin that a steward is someone who invests in something bigger than themselves. They know their purpose and create lives with meaning and direction. Even better, when we focus on others, we take the pressure off ourselves. We move away from if-then statements to because-therefore statements, and everyone wins.

Key Points

  • David York shares his definition of stewardship and why it matters.
  • He discusses the four destinations (consumer, dreamer, owner, and steward).
  • He talks about the connection between stewardship and leadership.

Meet David

  • Name: David R. York
  • His Story: David R. York is the author of The Gift of Lift: Harnessing the Power of Stewardship to Elevate the World. He is also an Attorney, Certified Public Accountant, and Managing Partner with the Salt Lake City law firm of York Howell & Guymon. He practices law in the areas of estate planning, tax, business planning, and nonprofit entities. He is a Fellow with the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and is the Dean of Legacy with the Purposeful Planning Institute. York currently serves on the Board of Directors of Holding Out HELP and Healing Nations.
  • Worth Mentioning: David is the co-author of Entrusted: Building A Legacy That Lasts and Riveted: 44 Values that Change the World, which after its release was the #1 Business Ethics book on Amazon. He is a highly sought-after speaker, he has spoken on the TEDx stage as well as to hundreds of public groups and professional organizations, including Q Commons, the Million Dollar Roundtable, the AALU National Conference. York has also written for Trusts & Estates Magazine, Estate Planning Magazine, and Investments and Wealth Monitor. In 2017, YHG was recognized as an Inc. 5000 Company.

We may be more connected than ever before; yet studies show we are also lonelier. Further, research indicates that for the first time, the emerging generation (Gen Z) is feeling more isolated and lonelier than the elderly population, and this was pre-Covid. Ryan Jenkins and Steven Van Cohen share with Kevin that we underestimate how much we need connection. When people show up lonely for work, they are 7x more likely to be disengaged, 5x more likely to miss work, and twice as likely to think about quitting their job. We need to be intentional about our connections and less transactional. This episode was recorded during our Mental Fitness Day, a Virtual LeaderCon event in April 2022.

Key Points

  • In this episode, Ryan and Steven discuss loneliness in the workplace.
  • They share the difference between loneliness and solitude.
  • They talk about belonging as an antidote to loneliness.

Meet Ryan and Steven

  • Name: Ryan Jenkins and Steven Van Cohen
  • Their Story: Ryan Jenkins, CSP and Steven Van Cohen, MSOD are founders of LessLonely.com, the world’s #1 resource for addressing workplace loneliness and creating more belonging at work. Collectively they have over 20 years of experience helping organizations like Coca-Cola, The Home Depot, State Farm, John Deere, Delta Air Lines and Salesforce improve their teams. Their work has been featured in Fast Company, Forbes, Wall Street Journal, SUCCESS, Inc., and Entrepreneur Magazine. When they are not writing and speaking, you can find them sampling craft beers, attempting to play golf together, and spending quality time with their respective families.
  • Worth Mentioning: Dubbed "The Leadership Whisperer" Steven has inspired thousands through his workshops, keynotes, and virtual events. He is CEO of SyncLX (a consultancy that works with many Fortune 500 companies.)
