A lot is going on out there. How can we pay better attention in a distracted world? Christian Madsbjerg joins Kevin to discuss the importance of observation and attention in leadership. Madsbjerg explains that observation is the practice of carefully and empirically studying humans to understand their experiences and behaviors. He emphasizes the need for leaders to set aside their opinions and preconceived notions to just describe what they see. Madsbjerg also introduces the concept of hyper-reflection, which involves observing how others observe and think. He encourages leaders to make time for observation and reflection, as these practices can lead to a deeper understanding of customers, teams, and social dynamics.

Meet Christian

  • Name: Christian Madsbjerg
  • His Story: Christian Madsbjerg is the author of several books, including Look: How to Pay Attention in a Distracted WorldSensemaking: The Power of the Humanities in the Age of the Algorithm, and The Moment of Clarity (co-authored with Mikkel Rasmussen), which have been translated into 15 languages. He is also an entrepreneur and academic who focuses on the practical and commercial application of the Human Sciences. He is the co-founder of the global consulting firm Red Associates. He also held the Professor of Applied Humanities position at The New School in New York City, where he centered his teaching on 20th-century continental philosophy. His work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Financial Times, The Washington Post, and Bloomberg Businessweek. He lives in New York City with his family.

Successful organizations build workplaces that work for everyone and that value everyone. Dr. Michelle King joins Kevin to discuss the how of work. These are the informal systems and unwritten rules that impact success and are changing as workplaces become more diverse. She highlights the four informal systems, which include networks, information sharing, development, and advancement. Further, we need to take responsibility for our own informal development through observation, feedback, and reflection.

Working with others is harder than it should be, and we know good relationships are essential for team and organizational success. Michael Bungay Stanier recognizes it’s easy to jump into the work. However, he joins Kevin to discuss the importance of the process and agree on how to do the work first. He suggests having a “keystone conversation” to build mutual understanding before starting a project. He suggests 5 questions to ask, these include: Amplify questions - what’s your best? Steady questions – what are your practices or preferences? Good Date and Bad Date questions – what did you learn from past successful and frustrating relationships? Repair questions – how do we fix it when things go wrong?

One hundred years of research tells us that a bump in salary does not impact employee engagement. In fact, MIT recently published findings showing that how appreciated employees feel has three times more influence on their decision to stay or leave a job than compensation. Not only does this reduce the cost of turnover, but companies that pay attention to their human capital outperform others. Dr. Paul White joins Kevin to discuss the 5 Languages of Appreciation in the workplace. These include Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Tangible Gifts, and Physical Touch. The implementation of appreciation isn't a top-down process. It starts with education, creating a shared language among team members, and then grows naturally. It's about connecting people and recognizing them for who they are, not just their work.

We are born self-confident. By the time we hit our teen years, that self-confidence dwindles. Lisa Sun suggests confidence is a mindset and we get to choose to be confident. Lisa joins Kevin to discuss the concept of gravitas and confidence. She realized that gravitas is about believing in yourself on the inside before projecting it outward. Lisa also shares the eight forms of confidence that she discovered through research and surveys and recognizes that all eight forms are valid, and each person's confidence language is unique. Leaders need to replace vague advice like "be more confident" with specific conversations about strengths and provide feedback that acknowledges individual strengths and why they believe in team members.

The word power carries a lot of weight, and we have the power to be intentional and proactive with our lives. Wendy Leshgold joins Kevin to discuss how to move toward the life you want professionally and personally. She shares five power principles which include, declaring a vision, choosing a new perspective, planning the work and working the plan, using the language of action, and getting curious. It is important to share a bold vision with others, despite it being somewhat scary and vulnerable. This builds relationships, encourages others to support us, and holds us accountable. We need to recognize we may fail and that is OK.
