Do you ask for ideas? Not just give permission to share ideas, but really invite new ideas. When Karin Hurt and David Dye worked with organizations, they noticed a pattern. Management thought their teams were not speaking up, and employees felt their ideas were not heard. This is all about culture. Karin and David join Kevin to discuss this pattern and their research leading to their latest book, Courageous Cultures: How to Build Teams of Micro-Innovators, Problem Solvers, and Customer Advocates. They found that across industries and countries, people hold on to negative experiences. So, leaders not only need to create a culture of trust, but they need to be clear of what ideas they want and how those ideas lead to organizational success.

When we give feedback, it is with the hope that the person on the receiving end will take action on that feedback. But giving feedback isn’t a one-and-done action. It’s a journey that has many steps along the way.

So before we (or should I say ‘they’) get to action, we must realize the emotions they will go through after hearing the feedback.

Once you understand the emotions, there are four steps you can take to help others apply your feedback.

The Industrial Age. Workers came into the factories and were told what jobs to do and how to do them. And for the time, this worked. However, we know the world and our work has changed, yet many leaders still operate under this model. I guess that’s why only 23% of the leaders are deemed effective. Alain Hunkins is the author of Cracking the Leadership Code: Three Secrets to Building Strong Leaders. He joins Kevin to talk leadership mindset and observations he has made from firsthand experiences leading leadership trainings for tens of thousands of leaders within hundreds of companies. Leaders need to understand what drives their team and sometimes this involves a difficult conversation. Success comes when you have a quality relationship and trust.

How fast are you going? How fast should you be going? Do you even know where you are going? Kevin is joined by Alan Willett, author of Lead with Speed: Fire Up Your Team, Power Your Engines of Development, and Make Your Organization Soar. Many organizations would say they need to be faster, whether that’s features added, products to market, or customer response. Alan suggests our speed needs to be relevant to the value. You can go as fast as you want, yet if you aren’t accomplishing your goals or are just fixing problems, are you moving forward? Sometimes it’s not about working harder/faster, it’s about doing something different.

She sits down with Kevin to talk about the role face plays in leadership through stories and examples. How do you give feedback? Maybe the better question is, how do you receive feedback? Steve Herz believes we need to create the environment for the give and take. Once we can accept feedback and take action to improve ourselves, giving feedback is easier and more accepting. Steve is the author of DON’T TAKE YES FOR AN ANSWER: Using Authority, Warmth, and Energy to Get Exceptional Results. Steve and Kevin discuss the AWE model and the “soft skills” we don’t focus on or dedicate resources to building. Yet, these skills help us become more confidence-inspiring and more respected, leading to more trust in your team. Remember recess? Swinging happily on swings, monkeying around on the monkey bars, or zooming down slides...

As kids, this was an important part of the day. It gives children the chance to socialize, burn off some much needed energy and re-focus so they are better equipped to learn throughout the day.

Not surprisingly, these are all things that we need as adults as well. And it's why breaks are so powerful to our success.

When we make the time for breaks throughout the day, we will get more accomplished, have better ideas and generally less stress.

And when we're working remotely, we need these breaks even more. In today's episode, I'm laying out the case for breaks!

Timothy Lupfer wants us to get back to basics about leadership. It is a role we are usually given and involves followers (whether they be employees, students…). Leadership is narrower than most of us think. Leadership is the role of affecting followers to achieve organizational goals. Tim is a retired Army, former consultant, and the author of Leadership Tough Love: Examining Leaders Through the Lens of Reality. He shares with Kevin his thoughts about leadership and why it’s more than just a position. He discusses scalability, specifically as it relates to the number of true relationships we have. Leaders need to focus on their immediate group, and we need good leaders at every level (to keep close relationships).

How are you using the power you have (for good or evil)? Yes, we all have power just through our relationships between colleagues, family, and friends. Thereby, it can be a bit tricky. According to Deborah Gruenfeld, we need to embrace and own our power, even if we are uncomfortable with it. Deb is a social psychologist and the author of Acting with Power. She shares with Kevin that there are levels of power and it is a responsibility that is yours. Often there are negative connotations with power, however, when you look at it in action, force is rarely used. People want to help you, so you will help them. When you have control over another’s outcomes you need to think about the interests you are serving; be the person other people hope you will be.

We have the tools for accounting principles, and these have remained unchanged for years. Yet we have no real tool to measure customer loyalty, and every bit of cash flow starts with cash from the customer’s pocket. Kevin is joined by Rob Markey. He is the author of a new Harvard Business Review article on how to run a company to maximize customer value, “Are You Undervaluing Your Customers?" He is also the co-author of The Ultimate Question 2.0. Rob believes that customer loyalty and company success go hand in hand. Companies with high satisfaction rankings grow revenues roughly 2.5 times as fast as their industry peers. Leaders need to find ways to get the voice of the customer in front of the entire organization, not just sales or customer service (regardless of the size of the organization.) Rob also shares ways to destroy customer value (a lesson on what not to do).

There has been much research focused on what leaders need to be effective. Ryan Gottfredson asked, how do we capture the being element of leadership? In other words, what is the mindset? Ryan is a consultant, professor, and author of Success Mindsets: The Key to Unlocking Greater Success in Your Life, Work, & Leadership. Kevin and Ryan both agree that our mindsets fuel our thinking, learning, and behavior. Further, if you don’t have the right mindset, it is more difficult to build your skillsets. Ryan recognizes that logically we know a command and control system does not work and yet studies show 65% of employees want a new boss compared to more pay. He found leaders still struggle, despite the logic, because for most people, our mindsets are something we are not aware of. Ryan is offering a free assessment on his website so you can see where you stand. At the end of the day, we all have room for improvement and Ryan offers suggestions to help us get there.
